Every October, the Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce proudly celebrates Manufacturing Month, spotlighting the crucial role that manufacturers play in supporting Northern Arizona’s economy. This year is especially exciting, with more student tours and increased engagement among local makers, underscoring the vibrancy of this essential industry.
Manufacturing provides a solid foundation for the regional economy by producing recession-resistant goods that support economic stability and growth. In Coconino County, nearly 5,000 individuals work in manufacturing, according to 2017 U.S. Census data. With the industry’s continued local growth, it offers high-quality, long-term career opportunities for residents. Additionally, a significant percentage of manufacturing workers in the region are women, bringing diverse perspectives and fostering an inclusive work environment.
Innovation drives the success of manufacturing in Northern Arizona. Local manufacturers continually invest in state-of-the-art machinery, cutting-edge technology, and new product designs. From medical devices to pet food, ice cream cones, and timber products, the variety of goods produced in Flagstaff demonstrates the versatility and strength of this sector. These essential products help ensure that, even during economic downturns, production remains strong, jobs are retained, and our local economy stays resilient.
Coconino County’s manufacturing industry also benefits from strong partnerships with federal and state agencies and an unmatched transportation network. The I-40 and I-17 corridors facilitate efficient distribution across the Southwest and connect to the Port of Long Beach for overseas shipments. Additionally, BNSF rail lines provide crucial infrastructure, allowing companies to efficiently receive raw materials and ship finished products.
As part of National Manufacturing Month, the Chamber organizes student tours at local plants to introduce young people to the culture and career opportunities available in the manufacturing sector. These tours aim to inspire students and highlight the meaningful contributions of local companies.
